This picture showed the box reserved in the theatre for the President of the United States. At first glance one might think it was not a box but the stage itself, for the parapet soared up into the open air. This parapet was made entirely of gold, to the smallest detail. Between its finely carved columns were arrayed medallions of former presidents, one with a strikingly straight nose, curling lips and eyes looking rigidly down beneath vaulted eye-lids. Around the box rays of light fell from above and from all sides, soft and white light that revealed the foreground of the box while its interior behind red curtains falling in changing folds from roof to floor held with cords, appeared like a dark red shimmering void. A duskily glowing empty cavern. One could scarcely imagine human figures in that box, everything looked so majestic.
